On September 8, 2015, Tara Brown, 24, was slain by her ex-partner Lionel Patea in a horrifying act of domestic violence after she had dropped off their 3-year-old daughter at a daycare facility in Molendinar.

When Ms. Brown was trapped in her overturned automobile, Patea pursued her, ran her car off the road, and beat her nearly 30 times in the head and face with a steel hydrant cover.

The Police failed to adequately investigate Ms. Brown’s complaint when she asked for assistance from officers at the Southport Police station five days before her murder to obtain a domestic violence protection order, according to a coroner’s inquest into her death by Deputy State Coroner Jane Bentley.

The Ethical Standards Command conducted an internal Police inquiry into the actions and inactions of Police officers at the station.

It happened a week after the deputy coroner criticized Police and social workers for mismanaging Fabiana Palhares’ case. Fabiana was a pregnant Brazilian ex-pat killed by her ex-boyfriend on the Gold Coast.

Despite Patea’s long history of domestic violence, Ms. Bentley noted that there had been a considerable escalation of violence ten days before Ms. Brown’s fatal attack.

Ms. Brown wanted to report a specific incident on August 30, 2015, when Patea threatened to knife her, pinned her down on a bed, and put scissors to her throat.

Tara Brown died on September 9, 2015, after her life support was turned off. Patea has physically altercated with other inmates since receiving a life sentence.

Lionel had severe mental health issues, according to his longtime attorney Campbell MacCallum, which caused him to deteriorate in a segregation wing of the prison.

It is reported that Lionel and Nelson’s mother, Vanessa, and Father, Andrae, were present at the Brisbane Supreme Court when their sons confessed to being murderers.

In less than ten years, the couple was raising their sons, aged 16 and 13, and going to Keebra Park State High School.

Despite being a Victoria native, Lionel spent his formative years in the New Zealand town of Whanganui with his family before migrating to the Gold Coast, where the brothers lived for their respective sports.

While Nelson played rugby league for the Coombabah Under 15s, Lionel represented the Benowa Under 17s.

Lionel, a player with more excellent talent, was selected for the South Coast Maori Rugby League. His Father, Andrae, was a supporter of the Nerang Rugby Union Club and a fundraiser for them.
